Today we wanted to introduce you to Bella Babe Tayler, the owner of Midnight Paloma, a local clean beauty brand using all natural ingredients. Along with her organic certified lab and in house aromatherapist, Tayler has used her industry insider knowledge to develop a collection of signature formulas based on a core belief in hero ingredients being a foundation for healthy living.
If you’re like us, you might be asking yourself, What are hero ingredients? Tayler describes them as powerhouse ingredients that are all natural and beneficial for healthy living. Charcoal was her first hero ingredient, chosen for its detoxifying properties. Now they've sourced chamomile, hempseed oil & coconut butter, adding them into their clean formulas to make the products the most effective as possible, without fillers, chemicals or synthetic preservatives. Midnight Paloma products range from body wash, to bath soaks, to face serums and more!
As usual, we asked Tayler some questions to give us a glimpse into life behind Midnight Paloma, and how she balances work and home life, and everything in between!
BW: When did you start Midnight Paloma? What inspired you?
TM: I started Midnight Paloma just over a year ago. I've worked in retail for over 10 years and I've seen a ton of different brands. I was so inspired by all these brands coming out of Vancouver. I had a lot of experience with products and I always wanted to do my own thing. I initially started it to sell out of the store I used to own, but slowly it grew and I knew it was something I should be doing.
BW: How did you come up with the name for your business?
TM: The name Midnight Paloma came from a few different inspirations. Our first collection was all charcoal dedicated: Midnight. And Paloma was the inspiration behind the scent: blood orange, lime, vanilla + grapefruit. Paloma is also a drink from Mexico that I love.
BW: What's your "why”?
TM: I wanted to create something that was modern and dedicated to clean beauty. I want you to feel good about what you are using on your body and feel good about it sitting on your counter. I love things that are locally made and made to last: concentrated formulas that you will be able to use for a long time. Self care is so important and I want my products to be a part of your routine.
BW: What do you love most about your work?
TM: I love having my hands in a lot of different things. When you own your own business, you really wear a lot of hats: marketing, product development, branding, social media, distribution - you name it! Having that diversity can be overwhelming, but I really thrive when I'm busy so I love it.
BW: How do you balance work/home/social life?
TM: Balance is something I'm always trying to work on but I've made a really big effort these last few months to have some. Taking time for breaks, getting outside, and unplugging are ways that I try to create a balance, and taking time for friends and family is always a priority. Some days are harder than others, but coming from a previous business where I ate/slept/breathed the business, I snapped and was living a really unhealthy lifestyle. It's not worth it, and I find I'm so much more productive when I have a proper balance.
BW: What advice would you give to another woman who is wanting to pursue her dream and start her own business?
TM: Research! We live in a time where we can access so much information on our own, it's incredible. You don't need to necessarily go to school to get to where you need to be. I also think that the small business community in Canada is so friendly, reaching out to go for coffee or ask questions is a great way to get an idea of where you need to be. Owning your own business is amazing, but it's also really consuming. I don't think it's for everyone and I think it's common to think that it's really easy. It can be incredibly rewarding but the highs are high and the lows are low, so knowing what you are getting yourself into is super key if you want to make it. Once you have your information and you are still feeling strong about it: go for it!
BW: What's your favourite autumn activity?
TM: I have two dogs who I love more than anything, so taking them out for a walk in the leaves is just my favourite. The weather is perfect and it's such a beautiful time of year here.
BW: If someone were to make a movie of your life, which actress would you want to play you?
TM: Only because I love her so much, Mandy Moore.
Tayler will be in the store on Friday, October 19 to meet customers and share more about her products! Stop by between 12 and 3 to learn more about her hero ingredients and save 20% off your Midnight Paloma products that day only.
