Many of us have known from a young age what we wanted to be as adults. We can remember the oversized doctor jacket we wore around the house, a blue and red Fisher Price stethoscope hanging from our necks, giving fake diagnoses to everyone at home. We can still picture our bedrooms filled with plastic cutlery ready for patrons to visit our "restaurant". Maybe you aspired to be a painter, writer or hair stylist- whatever it was, you had a dream.
Sometimes career aspirations come to you later in life. Some people discover their passion or desires in their adult years. Some take a few turns along the way, trying out one field before moving to another, until you settle on the one that gives you purpose and fulfillment.
Andrea Saliba’s career choice came from experiences she went through as a teen. She struggled with body complex issues and over time she knew there had to be a better and healthier way to view her body and life. Those difficult experiences set her in motion to finding her way to health. With a few other events with family that she speaks about below, Andrea was inclined to look at the whole picture, not just body but mind as well. Eventually this lead her to become a Health Coach and Holistic Nutritionist.
With a goal in mind, she pursued her dreams. Those dreams included going back to school while raising children at the same time. To say that Andrea is inspiring would be an understatement. She is proof that if you believe in something and keep working toward your goal, you can achieve your dreams.
Here’s what this week’s #bellababe, Andrea, has to say about her business and her pursuit to make her dreams come true:
BW: When did you start your career as a holistic nutritionist and fitness instructor? What inspired you?
AS: I started my career as a Group Fitness Instructor 18 years ago. I taught various styles of exercise classes such as cardio kickbox, bootcamp, step class and spin class. I suffered body complex issues as a teen and decided that I wanted to learn about how to care for my body in a positive way through proper exercise and healthy eating habits. My journey as a Health Coach and Holistic Nutritionist really began in 2010 when I became a Mother and when I found out that my Mother In Law was diagnosed with a rare disease called Scleroderma. I had always wanted to be a Nutritionist since a teen, but never pursued it until 2014 when I decided to enrol myself in Holistic Nutrition School. My hopes were to help my Mother In Law as much as I could, along with educating others and my new family on the importance healthy diet and lifestyle have in one's life.
BW: What's your "why"?
AS: My “why” is really for my family and for me. I want my children to grow up with a healthy relationship with food and exercise. Food today is not like our parents time and I want to educate them on proper choices so they can live a long healthy life. I say for myself too, because all my life my belief system was that I wasn’t good enough or smart enough. I took a stand to this belief when I enrolled myself in school back in 2014 to take this career and never looked back! I want my children to see that their Mother was brave enough to believe in herself and reached for her all time dream. That anything they want in this life they can have if they work for it and visualize it daily. I’m all about power of the mind; the hardest muscle in the body to work.
BW: What do you love most about your work?
AS: What I love most about my work is my clients! Each and every person that has entered my life has been absolutely a pleasure to work with and to see their faces light up when they have reached their goals, or made some type of shift for the positive in their life, that makes my heart smile! I genuinely care about every person I work with and want to see them succeed, so this is very rewarding for me as much as it is for them.
BW: How do you balance work and home life?
AS: Balancing life and work are quite the struggle. Each day I make sure I carve out time for my kids, like reading them a bedtime story, including them into my workouts, which they absolutely love, or sitting and just chatting about life. Our favourite is sitting on the couch and just chatting about whatever! I'm very aware that they are only little for so long, so being mindful of the time I have with them is precious to me. That's why I love being an entrepreneur. I make my schedule and can do as much or as little as I like. I truly believe that in order to be the best Mother and wife I must take care of myself first. This isn’t being selfish, this is a necessity! When I’m happy and vibrant, so is my family. Therefore, I take time for myself first by ensuring I get enough sleep, exercise daily, and have time to meditate. I’ve made this a priority for my own mental well being and I encourage all Mothers to do the same. We cannot pour from an empty cup! Ultimately, my family is the most important thing to me so I want them to have a happy, healthy Mother who will be fully present with them, not irritable and stressed.
BW: What advice would you give to another woman who is wanting to pursue her dream and start her own business?
AS: My advice to other women wanting to pursue this career is go for it! You only live once and if you have a passion for this industry, let it shine! Never be afraid of what’s to come. Put one foot in front of the other and go. Be sure you have a very good support system behind you that motivates and supports your decisions. I’m very fortunate for my friends, parents, and husband who constantly encourage me.
BW: What's your favourite autumn activity?
AS: My favourite autumn activity is running outdoors. I love fall and the crisp fresh air. Running is a huge stress relief for me and helps focus my attention and shift my mind to the positive.
BW: If someone were to make a movie of your life, which actress would you want to play you?
AS: I guess I would have to say Sandra Bullock only because she is a strong, independent and confident woman who also has an edgy silly side to her. I’m very much this way. I am very independent and strong willed and, although I can be serious when needed, I also have a “rough around the edges” personality that loves to be silly and joke around.
